Tree hut

We have been learning how to use adjectives to describe a mood and atmosphere. Here is a picture of our tree house that my group made and the adjectives to describe the mood.

Can you guess the mood and atmosphere?

Tectonic plates

Last Friday we did an experiment to learn about the tectonic plates and how the movement of the plates help shape NZ. I learned that divergence, convergence and transform are ways that the plates can move, which can create an earthquake or a volcanic eruption.

Here are some photos from my experiment. Can you guess what we used for our magma?

Measuring heads Shaun

This week for math we've been doing measurements and its been super fun doing this stuff.

My favourite thing was the graph because it was the best.

The hard thing was the head measuring because it was hard to get the wool straight but I did it in the end.

Ski Trip

Kia ora

Today we built Mt Ruapehu in the sandpit. We also made the Whangaehu River valley, the plain below the mountain and the railway bridge at Tangiwai. We wanted to learn how the lahar destroyed the bridge in 1953 causing the Tangiwai Disaster. Kora and Ariana poured lots of water into the crater we had made on top of our mountain. It whoosed down the side of the mountain and into the river valley. The bridge collapsed and bits of our train fell into the river. After that, we watched a short video about what do do if you are on Mt Ruapehu when the lahar siren sounds.  Now I know how to keep safe from a lahar if one happens when I am on a mountain.  Here is my Hazard Notice with the most important information.

Piopio Birds

Last term me and my group did 5 questions about the North Island Piopio which were native birds to NZ.
The hard thing about this task was trying to put things into my own words. The easy thing about this task was searching up the answers. What I enjoyed about this task was blogging.

                                                                        Here is my work.

My DNA Monster

Today we learned about the molecule DNA, Deoxyribonucleic Acid, our unique

recipe that makes us look like we do!
We used our knowledge of DNA and recessive and dominant traits to create
our own unique DNA monsters.

Here is my DNA table of traits and a picture of my DNA monster.

What I like best about my monster is the eyes.

Anzac cake by Shaun

Today I made a cake for Anzac and I basically did all of the work and this cake doesn't need milk, eggs, and butter and it cooks for 40 minutes. We used our great grandmother’s measuring cup because we used ounces. We also used measuring spoons  for the liquids.
Ingredients:
Water
Vanilla essence
Vegetable oil
Flour
Cocoa
Baking powder
Brown sugar

The exciting thing about this was the drawing.
The hard thing was the Maori language.

Science: Me and my DNA

This term for science we are learning all about how the human body works and how special we all are. We are also trying to learn how to think and act more like a scientist. So, Miss Fletcher asked us to look at our faces in the mirror and write down notes about what we look like. The information had to be precise and clear so that when someone read it, it would help them find the person it described quickly. It was a bit like being a detective. You had to look and notice things carefully.

Miss Fletcher said that what we look like depends on our mother and father. Making a new human is a bit like making a cake.  You get some ingredients from your mum and some from your dad. The ingredients are called DNA. Everybody’s cake is different to everyone else’s.

Miss Fletcher said the person with the most efficient description was Andrew J as he wrote: My hair is 1cm long all over. He is the only student in Team Moana with a haircut like that so he was able to be identified very easily. You can read my description below. The sentences highlighted in blue are the ones that Miss Fletcher said were not precise and clear enough.  Twenty people said they could recognise me from my description.

My Similes

This term for our novel study, Mrs A read us Whitebait Fritters which is a novel written by a Kiwi author Kingi McKinnon. My favourite part in Whitebait Fritters was when I got to eat it. To wind up our learning we decided to make some fake whitebait fritters because we can’t afford to buy real whitebait. We used grated potato to take the place of whitebait and mixed it with eggs and onions. They were really tasty. Then we had to write out the recipe, put it on a Google Drawing and add some images. You can see my work below.

Maths: Geometry Safari

This term for maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D geometry.  Fred, Barney and I were in a team. We went on a Geometry Safari around the school grounds to see how many 2D  and 3D shapes we could find. Then we had to write what we had found into a table. You can see ours below.

Whitebait Fritters Reading Activity

Ola fellow readers this term we will be focusing on Whitebait Fritters.
I enjoyed the reading and the writing.
I found hard the creating the people and the Whitebait.
The learning behind this task was learning about Whitebait fritters and the zones of regulation.
My group names were Piata, Cruz  and Sydney-Rose.
The task I did was an animation.
Here is my work.
